Brother HL-6050DN, An Out Of The Box Network Printer

Brother printers have the reputation of providing bargain basement products for consumers. In a reevaluation of their marketing concepts, Brother has produced the HL-6050DN, a monochrome laser printer that uses Brother HL 6050DN Toner to compete with comparable printers produced by other manufacturers.

A standard built in 10/100 Ethernet interface enables the HL-6050DN to be installed into the small office environment straight out of the box. A major asset to the small business is the paper capacity of the Hl-6050DN. The standard paper tray holds 500 sheets of paper. This full ream of paper can be either letter or legal size. An optional additional paper tray also holds 500 sheets.

Utilization of both paper trays allows legal paper to be place in one tray and letter sized paper in the second. Many small business applications require duplex printing. A duplex printing function is included on the HL-6050DN as a standard feature.

The generous paper tray requires that the toner cartridges and drum in this laser printer allow for volume printing jobs. The TN670 toner cartridge will yield approximately 7,500 pages with 5% coverage when printed on letter sized paper. The DR600 drum unit will provide for 30,000 pages. This toner cartridge and drum combination allow for less down time while toner cartridge and drum are being changed along with a low printed page cost.

Memory on the HL6050DN is not something that is lacking. While competitors offer 16MB of memory as a standard, Brother has supplied 32MB of standard memory. Should that be insufficient, an expansion slot is available for optional chips sized at 16MB, 32MB, 64MB and 128MB. This availability of optional sized chips permits the small business network to determine how much extra memory is needed and then meet that need.

Other printers may print faster, however the HL-6050DN will print at 18 ppm. for as long as it is needed to. This speed, combined with 10-12 seconds startup time for the first page provides sufficient speed for all but the most exceptional situation that arises in the small business.

Setup of the HL-6050DN is quick and simple. The Quick Start utility program provided by Brother allows even the most inexperienced person to quickly and accurately provide the utilities that are necessary for the printer to operate. Changes to the program can be accomplished either from the computer’s system tray or a file resident in the computer.

Brother has recognized that different businesses utilize different platforms. With that in mind, Brother created the HL-6050DN with the ability to operate on any platform. A business running a Linux platform receives the same superior service from the Hl-6050DN as does the business running an Apple OS or one running Windows.
